Lumbar Support for Intensive Use Chairs

Friday, March 20, 2009

For users sitting down to eight, ten, or even twelve hour shifts, lumbar support is a vital dimension of comfort and health. Long periods of sitting flatten the lumbar curve which leads to a variety of lower back problems. The greatest amount of body weight is supported in the lumbar region of the back, making pain and damage of the lumbar region a disturbingly common workplace injury. Chairs that lack proper and adjustable lumbar support leave their users vulnerable to physical pain and to long-term damage to their vertebrae.

Compression is one of the biggest threats to back and vertebrae health and one to which that workers a variety of contexts are certainly susceptible. Individuals who sit most or all day put pressure on their lower regions of their spine, which can lead to flattening for vertebrae that eventually develops into lower back pain. Regular desk chairs that lack proper lumbar support imposes a low-grade, long-term compressive load on their users already overwhelmed lower back. Using a chair with proper lumbar support which maintains the proper S curve of the spine is the only way to avoid compression injury and pain. However, not all lumbar supports are created equally.

A crucial element for proper lumbar support is based on its ability of a chair to fit and conform to the unique body shapes of its users. As a general rule, all adjustable elements for an intensive use chair should be customizable to users ranging from males in the ninety-fifth percentile (6’4”) to females in the fifth percentile (5’3”). Lacking this adjustability, static lumbar supports can actually cause more problems than they solve by forcing the unique spinal configurations of users into unmovable shapes and unnatural forms.

Lumbar support must be dynamic enough to adapt to a number of different body shapes, while firm enough to provide effective support. This can be achieved either through a mechanical lumbar support or an air bladder system that forces air into a bladder that can vary the support based on the pressure on the air applied. A major problem with these air bladder systems, however, is that they can develop leaks, which leads to a loss of adjustability and adaptability. More than likely, you’d have to replace the damaged chair, as repair of air bladders is difficult and costly. They are especially prone to wear and damage when exposed to the rigors of the 24/7 intensive use work environment. Mechanically adjustable lumbar supports are far more durable, especially in the intensive use setting, are far cheaper and easier to repair or replace if needed. This accessibility and replace ability leads to long-term durability and profitability.

Domore chairs feature a mechanical and fully adjustable Schukra Lumbar Support System. In addition to supporting the vertebral disk in the lumbar region, this built-in lumbar system supports the pelvis to provide balance for the spinal column and cushions the upper body to help reduce neck pain. The Schukra system is adjustable to fit a myriad of body shapes and dimensions while providing a superior level of support and comfort to its users. When coupled with the respected and well-known durability of Domore chairs the result is a user-centered, ergonomically-correct, and long-lasting furniture investment that is a natural fit for a variety of intensive-use work environments.
